“And the next morning, when I wake up, I am reborn.”
So last night for maybe the 6th time in my life I had an episode of sleep paralysis, basically it is where you think you are awake but you’re actually asleep so you can’t move or scream, which is what I was trying to do as some unknown entity was dragging me out of my body towards the door, this was no fun lucid dream!
Sleep paralysis is where your normal cycles become out of sync with each other, basically your mind wakes up and your body is asleep, you are aware of your surroundings but you cannot move and in most cases there will be hallucinatory experiences which some say are supernatural. You may experience knocking sounds, pressure on your chest, shadowy figures or seeing your body from the outside. During the REM sleep stage muscles are paralysed to stop us acting out our dreams, the technical term for this is REM atonia. Sleep paralysis usually occurs when sleeping on your back.
Waking up from this state can be difficult, and its quite scary as you can’t move or speak but you are aware of things as if you are fully conscious. You can try wiggling your toes, fingers or facial muscles to try and wake yourself up if you get stuck in such a state. Try not to struggle or stress out if you can’t wake yourself up straight away.
Nobody really knows why sleep paralysis occurs but research has shown that it isn’t dangerous, although for anyone who has experienced will know that it is scary as fuck.
